Wood Work in Youth Work

Hands-on Tools for Environmental Education and Youth Work

Wood Work in Youth Work is an Erasmus+ KA220-YOU Cooperation Partnership that connects woodworking, environmental education and non-formal youth work. The project supports youth workers and educators in developing practical skills, creating educational tools and using hands-on methods to engage young people in learning. Through a training course, tool blueprints, physical prototypes, testing phases, tutorial videos and an educational manual, the project helps transfer creative and sustainable woodworking methods into youth work practice.

About

About the
Project

Wood Work in Youth Work explores how practical woodworking can become a meaningful educational method in youth work. The project combines hands-on learning, environmental education, creativity and safe tool use to support youth workers and educators in creating engaging learning experiences.

The project includes a 5-day training course in Lithuania for youth educators and trainers. The main purpose of the training is to develop participants’ hands-on woodworking competences, strengthen their capacity for environmental education and provide a practical first stage for testing educational tools developed in the project.

The project is organised in several phases: preparation, training, development of tool blueprints, production of physical prototypes, local testing, improvement of tools, tutorial videos, educational manual development and dissemination.

Context

Why this project
exists

Youth work often needs methods that are practical, creative and connected to real-life skills. Woodworking offers a powerful learning space where young people can build, experiment, cooperate and understand sustainability through action.

At the same time, many youth workers and educators need support to use hands-on methods safely and meaningfully. Wood Work in Youth Work responds to this need by developing practical tools, blueprints, workshop scenarios and guidance that can be used in different youth work contexts.

The project promotes environmental education, safe tool use, creativity, cooperation and local community involvement.

Goals

Project
Objectives

01

Improve educators’ competences in woodwork and environmental education.

03

Promote the methodology and involve local communities.

Timeline

Project
Journey

  1. 01

    Survey, needs mapping and preparation

The project begins with coordination, partner agreements, planning, task distribution and quality monitoring. Partners prepare a survey and needs mapping process to better understand the needs of youth workers in relation to woodwork, environmental education, safe tool use and practical learning methods.

  2. 02

    Training Course — Lithuania

06–12 April 2026 · Šiauliai, Lithuania · Šiaulių techninės kūrybos centras

The training course brings together youth workers, educators and trainers to develop practical woodworking competences, explore environmental education and begin testing educational tools in a hands-on setting. Working days: 07–11 April 2026.

  3. 03

    Raw ideas and tool concepts

Participants and partners collect at least 10 raw tool ideas, including sketches, intended use, target groups and learning aims. These ideas form the basis for the educational tool blueprint set.

  4. 04

    Blueprints and physical prototypes

The project develops 10 digital blueprints with clear instructions, parts lists, dimensions, safety notes and use cases. Physical prototypes of the tools are produced and delivered to partners for testing.

  5. 05

    First testing phase

Each partner tests the first version of the tools with external participants. Feedback is collected on usability, safety, clarity of instructions, engagement and possible improvements.

  6. 06

    Improved tools and final versions

Based on partner feedback, the blueprints and physical tools are improved. Final versions are produced and sent to partners for validation.

  7. 07

    Final testing phase

Each partner runs a second testing phase with the final tools to validate the improvements and collect final recommendations for the manual.

  8. 08

    Tutorial videos

Tutorial videos demonstrate how to use the tools safely and effectively. They include facilitation tips, practical guidance and key safety messages.

  9. 09

    Educational manual

The project develops an educational manual based on surveys, workshop scenarios, tool blueprints, testing results and partner experience. The manual will be available in English and partner national languages.

  10. 10

    Multiplier events and dissemination

Each partner organises a local multiplier event to present the project results, tools, blueprints, scenarios and manual to external participants and local stakeholders.
